Team India captain Rohit Sharma and ex-skipper Virat Kohli are two of the greatest modern-day batters in cricket. While Rohit missed out on scoring big runs in the first two Tests against England and Kohli missed the two games due to personal reasons. Former England captain Joe Root is well aware of the danger possessed by the two Indian superstars. Root revealed that England's focus will be to keep Rohit and Virat as quiet as they can in the remaining three Tests of the ongoing five-match series.
"You mentioned two of the greats of the modern era," said Root while speaking on JioCinema and Sports18.
"Of course, there's going to be focus. We know how good they are and they are also very senior within this current Indian batting lineup. So clearly they've got a big role to play within this Test team.
"You want to make sure that you try and get on top of them early. They've got the ability to get big scores and we've been on the wrong end of that a few times, so it would be nice to try and keep them as quiet as we can throughout the series," he added.
Flop show from Rohit Sharma in the first two Tests
Rohit has endured a below-par series with the bat so far. In the four outings against England thus far, the 'Hitman' has scored just 90 runs and is yet to score a half-century in the series. The Indian skipper has got starts but failed to convert them into a big score, which in a way, has exposed the young middle-order.
Will Virat Kohli return for the final three Tests against England?
There is still no clarity on whether Kohli will be part of the Indian squad for the remaining three Tests against England. The cricketing community is keenly awaiting the announcement of India's squad for the third Test against England, set to commence in Rajkot on February 15.
Following the end of the second Test between India and England, head coach Rahul Dravid was queried about Kohli's potential reintegration into the Indian Test team before the third Test against England.
"I think it's best to ask the selectors. I am sure they are the best people to answer ahead of the team selection for the next three Tests. We will get to that. I am sure there will be selection over the next few days. We will connect with him and find out," Dravid said.
