India missed a crucial opportunity to dismiss Joe Root early in his innings when he was on 16. In the 25th over, Root mistimed a sweep shot off Axar Patel and was struck on the pads. Despite a loud appeal from the Indian team, the umpire ruled it not out, and India opted not to review the decision. Replays later confirmed that the ball would have hit the stumps, resulting in an out. With England's middle order struggling to contribute significantly, dismissing Root at that stage could have allowed India to restrict them to a much lower total.

A quickfire 41-run cameo from Liam Livingstone then propelled them past the 300-run mark, setting India a challenging target of 305.
