The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rolled out a massive change in its player regulations, as reported by ANI. Following a review meeting to assess the Team India's performance, the governing body has decided to restrict player travel privileges during overseas tours.
BCCI's crackdown on Indian cricketers on disciplinary ground
Reportedly, BCCI has explicitly instructed all players that they will no longer be permitted to travel with personal staff, including hairstylists, cooks, and personal security guards to streamline logistical arrangements and potentially reduce costs associated with player travel.
"Players are not allowed to travel with their personal staff ( hairstylist, Cook, personal security guard) on tour anymore," a source privy to the development told ANI.
BCCI has recently taken a series of stringent measures in response to the team's back-to-back underwhelming performance, including the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In addition to restricting players from traveling with personal staff, the BCCI has also imposed limitations on the duration of family visits during overseas tours.
Families of players will now be permitted to join them for only two weeks during 45-day long tours. This decision aims to maintain a focused and disciplined environment for the team while on tour.
The BCCI is also stressing on the fitness standards, a regime introduced under Virat Kohli. The board aims to prioritise fitness as a key selection criterion, rather than solely focusing on injury prevention in the face of a demanding schedule. To this end, the Yo-Yo test is set to be reintroduced, ensuring players meet stringent fitness benchmarks. Not jus this, the BCCI has introduced new travel and luggage restrictions.
Players will now be limited to a total luggage allowance of 150 kilograms per tour, including personal belongings, kit bags, and team equipment.
The Men in Blue recently faced a series of disappointing results, including a 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand at home, a historic ODI series loss to Sri Lanka after 27 years, and a 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, costing them the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final spot. The back-to-back flop show has drawn criticism, with both captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir facing scrutiny. India now have three big assignments in their hand which will span from T20I and ODI series against England to Champions Trophy 2025
