India vice-captain Shubman Gill has dismissed concerns about Virat Kohli's injury and stated that the ace batter will return to the starting lineup for the second ODI in Cuttack. Due to a right knee injury, Kohli was unable to play in Nagpur, and his return to the Indian team was delayed. To prove himself fit to play the game, Kohli was seen doing a late fitness test; unfortunately, he was unable to make it. Gill batted at number three and Yashasvi Jaiswal replaced Kohli in the lineup as India won the game by a final margin of four wickets to take a 1-0 lead.
Shubman Gill on Virat Kohli
Gill told the broadcaster after the game that Kohli had minor knee swelling in the morning but was good until practice the night before the game. Gill said that there is nothing to worry about Virat.
"When he woke up in the morning, he had some swelling in his knee. He was fine till yesterday's practice session. There's nothing to worry. He will definitely be fit for the next game," said Gill.
Shubman Gill on batting at number 3
The supporters will be happy to see Kohli back, considering this was one of the few games he missed during his career. Due to Kohli's injury, Gill took over as the star batter's regular position and led the run chase with an incredible 87 off 95 balls. The 25-year-old claimed that because he now bats at No. 3 in Test matches, he did not need to make many changes to his style of play. According to Gill, his strategy was to bat based on the circumstances.
"I think I play at number three in Test matches, so it wasn’t a huge adjustment. But, definitely, the situation is slightly different. If you are batting at number three and early wickets fall, you have to play according to the situation. However, if the openers have built a good partnership, then you have to carry that momentum forward. That was my thought process—to bat according to the situation and the over in which I had to come in," said Gill.
India and England will now be competing against each other in the second ODI which will take place in Cuttack, on February 9 (Sunday).
