West Indies cricket team are currently leading in the ongoing five-match T20I series against England by 2-1 but controversies seem to be unending in West Indies cricket as off-field issues still remain to gather some attention.
In recent times, there were multiple claims that a crack has taken place between T20I skipper Kieron Pollard and other players in the T20 squad. But Cricket West Indies (CWI) on January 28 (Friday) dismissed all such claims by saying that “that there is no discord between the Team Captain and any member of the West Indies team.”
Official statement
“Cricket West Indies (CWI) is aware that earlier today, voice notes were circulated on social media, and in sections of the regional broadcast media, suggesting that there is a rift within the West Indies Senior Men’s team," CWI said in an official statement on Friday.
“Contrary to the unsubstantiated statements, containing unfounded and mischievous allegations, CWI is satisfied that there is no discord between the Team Captain and any member of the West Indies team," the official statement further read.
CWI president Ricky Skerritt on the other hand, there was an attempt by “well-known mischief makers to discredit the Captain and to derail the Team’s momentum” in the current T20I series against England cricket team.
‘Malicious attack’
“I view this as a malicious attack on the credibility of the West Indies Captain, designed to sow division within our team that has just recorded three very impressive T20I performances against very strong opponents, including two outstanding wins and one heroic comeback to get within one run of victory," Skerritt said in an official statement.
“This clear attempt by well-known mischief makers to discredit the Captain and to derail the Team’s momentum in the ongoing Betway T20I Series should not be tolerated or encouraged," he explained.
The Kieron Pollard-led side started the T20I series convincingly after they defeated the England team in the first match by 9 wickets. In the second match, Eoin Morgan’s men scripted a comeback after they beat the hosts by 1 run but the West Indies side reclaimed their lead in the series after they won the third match by 20 runs.
The fourth match of the series is scheduled to be played on January 30 (Sunday).
