WI vs ENG: Kyle Mayers claims maiden five-wicket haul to give hosts upper hand in third Test

West Indies pacer Kyle Mayers claimed his maiden five-wicket haul on the third day of the third Test against England, played at the National Cricket Stadium, St George's, in Grenada.

Mayers scripted a terrific 5/9 on Day Three, as the visitors collapsed to 8-103 by the close of play. West Indies currently lead by 10 runs in the third Test match. In the first innings, the 29-year-old West Indies pacer had picked up two wickets conceding 13 runs in 10 overs.


Alex Lees, skipper Joe Root (5 runs off 12 balls), Dan Lawrence (0 off 6 balls), Ben Stokes (4 runs off 18 balls) and Craig Overton (1 run off 10 balls) were dismissed by Mayers, in the second innings of the third and final Test match of the series.


English opening batsman Alex Lees showed some good batting skills as he managed to score 31 runs off 132 balls but ultimately his resilient batting proved to be inconsequential as the visitors ended the third day's play at 103/8.


England batter Jonny Bairstow scored 22 runs off 82 balls.


Apart from Mayers, West Indies bowlers Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph bagged one wicket each.


First innings show

Earlier, in the first innings, England posted a total of 204 runs. England pacer Saqib Mahmood turned out to be the highest scorer in the first innings for the English side as he scored 49 runs off 118 deliveries.


For West Indies, Jayden Seales claimed three wickets as Kemar Roach, Kyle Mayers and Alzarri Joseph picked up two wickets each.


In reply, the hosts secured a total of 297 runs in the first innings as wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva played a terrific innings of 100 runs (not out) off 257 balls. His innings was comprised of 10 boundaries.


English pacer Chris Woakes claimed three wickets as Craig Overton, Saqib Mahmood and Ben Stokes bagged two wickets each.


Previously, the first Test match of the three-match series had ended in a draw. There was not much difference in the outcome of the second Test match as it resulted in a draw as well. The visitors currently seem to be in a good position to win the third Test match and eventually clinch the Test series.
