Adam Gilchrist picked India, Australia, Pakistan and England as potential semi-finalists of ODI World Cup.

Legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist, renowned for his prolific international career spanning nearly 400 matches, amassing over 15,000 runs and making more than 900 dismissals, has expressed his confidence in Australia's prospects for the forthcoming ODI World Cup and revealed his potential semi-finalists for the quadrennial competition.

"I think India and Pakistan could feature in the semi-finals, Australia and England are another two teams," Gilchrist told PTI.

Gilchrist, whose record stands testament to his mastery in the game, is backing Australia, five-time World Cup champions, to put up a commendable performance in the tournament hosted by India. This optimism comes even after the Australian side faced a series loss against South Africa recently. Gilchrist believes that such experiences only pave the way for learning and refining strategies, thus preparing the team for more significant challenges ahead.

"Australia will learn a lot from their efforts in South Africa when they come to India, they have got three games before the World Cup against India so they will have a bit more of a full strength squad there so that might tell us a bit about where they are at so its a bit hard who's gonna win it (World Cup) but I think there is probably four semi-finalists there," said Gilchrist.

One such challenge arose when leg-spinner Adam Zampa faced a tough outing against South Africa's Heinrich Klaasen. Zampa, who is generally known for his tight bowling, ended up conceding 113 and 70 runs in his stipulated overs during an ODI match. Such figures would generally dent the confidence of a bowler, especially ahead of a mega event like the World Cup.

However, Gilchrist, drawing from his vast experience and understanding of the game, remains unwavering in his belief in Zampa's capabilities. He emphasizes Zampa's track record, his inherent talent, and his resilience, voicing confidence that the spinner will make a strong comeback during the World Cup.

"Adam Zampa, obviously in South Africa was at the receiving end a little bit but it's different conditions out here in India with different pitches and he is a world-class spin bowler and he has shown that particularly across T20 cricket and now he gets his chance in the 50 over World Cup," Gilchrist said.

In essence, as the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the ODI World Cup's thrill and fervor, icons like Gilchrist continue to inspire and instill hope in teams and players, underscoring the spirit of the sport.
