After 10 consecutive wins in ICC Men's World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma's India faltered in the final against Australia. With India’s six-wicket loss to Australia after posting 240 on the board at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach ended as well. In the post-match press conference, Dravid was asked about his future in Team India to which he said that he has not given thought to it.
"I have not given any thought to next year's T20 World Cup, I don't know what's there in future," said Dravid in the post-match presentation.
Under Dravid, India were beaten by England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal in Australia. India reached the World Test Championship 2021-23 final only to be beaten by Australia in the final on England soil. In the World Cup 2023, India looked invincible but were outclassed in all departments of the game by Australia.
In the upcoming T20I series against Australia starting November 23, VVS Laxman will take up the role for the second-string side.
Dravid lauded skipper Rohit Sharma for his fearless batting approach. Even in the final, he took on Australian new-ball bowlers smashing a 31-ball 47 before losing his wicket to Glenn Maxwell.
"Rohit has been an exceptional leader, always committed to planning and gave personal time and energy to this campaign. Obviously, there is disappointment, but this team has given a lot of joy in the past couple of months. Of course, Rohit and team is disappointed, and it is tough to see the emotion as coach in that dressing room. But the sun will come up tomorrow, and as sportsmen, we move on," he added.
After Rohit's wicket, Indian batters struggled for boundaries and managed to post 240 on the board. Dravid does not feel that Indian batters turned defensive but rather played according to the situation after three wickets fell for 81 runs.
"We played fearless cricket, we had 80 runs in first powerplay. Sometimes, you have to rebuild innings after losing a few wickets, we were not defensive," the 50-year-old said.
