The ODI World Cup fever has finally arrived on the coast of India and two of the biggest teams of the cricket world — England and New Zealand — will commence the month-and-a-half-long extravaganza at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, October 5.
England might not have Ben Stokes for the opening fixture but it is the Kiwis who have more injury concerns in their ranks. Tim Southee and Kane Williamson will miss the first game, making the clash a possibly mouth-watering affair. They have faced off 10 times at the ODI World Cup, with New Zealand triumphing on five occasions, while England have won four games. Their only tied game was the infamous ODI World Cup final of 2019, which saw the match and the Super Over both tied and England securing the trophy on boundary count.

During the opening match of the 1996 ODI World Cup, New Zealand triumphed over England with a margin of 11 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium (then known as the Sardar Patel Stadium) in Ahmedabad. Nathan Astle from New Zealand was awarded the Player of the Match for his impressive 101 runs off 132 balls.
2007: New Zealand won by six wickets (Gros Islet)
In the World Cup second Group C match at Beausejour Stadium in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, New Zealand defeated England by six wickets. Scott Styris, who was named the Player of the Match, scored 87 runs off 113 deliveries.
2015: New Zealand won by eight wickets (Wellington)
England faced a second disheartening loss at the start of their World Cup journey when New Zealand convincingly defeated them by eight wickets in Wellington.
Eoin Morgan's team experienced a significant setback, being bowled out for a mere 123 – marking England's lowest World Cup score overseas. Brendon McCullum's rapid 18-ball fifty then propelled New Zealand to achieve the target in merely 12.2 overs, even before the lights of Wellington Regional Stadium were needed.
2019: England won by 199 runs (Chester-le-Street)
England got their revenge for their mauling in 2015 when, in 2019, they clinched their semi-final berth, thanks to Jonny Bairstow's scintillating century, leading them to a 119-run victory against New Zealand in a crucial match in Durham.
2019: Tied (Lord’s)
After their win in the group stage, the two met in the final as well. Ben Stokes delivered an outstanding 84 not out, and Jofra Archer kept his composure, leading England to triumph over New Zealand based on boundary count-back following a Super Over. This victory in the intensely dramatic final at Lord's marked England's maiden World Cup win, making it one of the most unforgettable cricket matches ever.
