To date, India have successfully held its ground against Pakistan in ODI World Cup encounters, boasting a remarkable 7-0 lead.

 

Here's a dive into each of those unforgettable encounters, where pride, passion, and cricketing brilliance took center stage:  

 

1. 1992 – Sydney Showdown


The 1992 ODI World Cup in Sydney marked the first encounter between these two arch-nemesis. After India's captain Mohammad Azharuddin, opted to bat first, India posted a competitive total of 216/7, with significant contributions from Ajay Jadeja (46) and the young prodigy Sachin Tendulkar (unbeaten 54). The Pakistani batters faltered in their chase, despite a valiant effort from Aamer Sohail (60) and Javed Miandad (40), who put on a stand of 88 runs for the third wicket but to only succumb to a total of just 173 as India won the game by 43 runs. Interestingly, this setback did not deter Pakistan, who eventually lifted the World Cup trophy that year.

2. 1996 – The Bangalore Battle


The stage was set in Bangalore in 1996 for the next face-off. India, batting first, set an imposing total of 287/8, led by Navjot Singh Sidhu's 93. 

Pakistan's opening duo, Aamir Sohail and Saeed Anwar, started off impressively, crafting a partnership of 84 runs. However, Anwar's innings came to a halt at 48 runs, courtesy of Javagal Srinath's bowling. Sohail furthered his score to 55 but was eventually outsmarted by Venkatesh Prasad. During the match, after hitting a boundary off Prasad, Sohail sledged the bowler. In a fitting reply, Prasad dismissed him in the very next ball. The rest of the Pakistani batsmen struggled to stay on the crease as they ran out of steam and were folded for 248/9.
 

3. 1999 – Manchester Duel


Manchester in 1999 saw the teams meet once again. India once again had Mohammad Azharuddin winning the toss for the third successive time, choosing to bat first against Pakistan. Batting legends Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid played pivotal roles where the former Tendulkar contributed iwth 45 runs while latter reached struck an impressive half-century. Azharuddin too chipped in with a brilliant fifty himself, propelling India to a total of 227/6 in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, Pakistan were folded for a paltry 180 to hand India a 47-run win.

 

4. 2003 – Centurion Confrontation


By 2003, Indian cricket had evolved, with Sourav Ganguly at the helm. Under his leadership, India had already seen some success on the global stage. In their World Cup match against Pakistan in Centurion, Pakistan set a challenging target of 273/7, anchored by Saeed Anwar's century. India's response was clinical, with Sachin Tendulkar leading the way with a quickfire 98. India triumphed, securing the game by six wickets.

 

5. 2011 – The Mohali Mega-Clash


2011's World Cup brought with it a high-stakes semi-final battle between India and Pakistan in Mohali. Batting first, India posted a decent total of 260. During Pakistan's chase, their batsmen failed to find a foothold, losing crucial wickets at pivotal moments. Every Indian bowler chipped in, each claiming two scalps. Tendulkar's masterclass in batting earned him the Player of the Match, and India sealed the game by 29 runs. The significance of this victory was magnified when India clinched the World Cup title after a gap of 27 years, defeating Sri Lanka in the final.

 

6. 2015 – Adelaide drama

 

Entering the tournament with the title of defending champions, India faced off against Pakistan in Adelaide. With Virat Kohli leading the charge by scoring an impressive 107 runs, India set a challenging total of 300/7. During the chase, Pakistan seemed out of their depth, eventually being bowled out for 224 handing India an easpy peasy 76-run victory. This marked Virat's second century in World Cup tournaments and his 22nd in ODIs overall. 

 

7. 2019 – Manchester Mayhem

 

Ace cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle succinctly summed up the game in his tweet, stating, 'Wasn't a contest.'

India displayed superiority in all facets of the match. Rohit Sharma's century laid the foundation for the Indian team, which was then complemented by stellar performances from the medium pacers and star spinner Kuldeep. Riding on Rohit blistering 140-run knock India posted a total of 336/5. In reply, Pakistan's batting faltered and were bowled out for a 212/6 hading india an 89-run victory via D/L Method.

 

The arch-rivals will be up against each other one more time, this time in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Pakistan will look to end India's invincibility against them on October 14 at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad.
