Inzamam-ul-Haq stepped down from the chief selector post as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) launched an investigation into ‘conflict of interest’ allegations related to team selection.
"I am stepping down from the post to offer the PCB the opportunity to conduct a transparent inquiry about the conflict of interest allegations raised in the media. If the committee finds me not guilty, I will resume my role as the chief selector," said Inzamam.
In addition to resigning as chairman of the national men's selection committee, he also stepped down from the junior selection committee. The former Pakistan captain sent his resignation letter to PCB chief Zaka Ashraf after Babar Azam-led side lost to South Africa in a thriller of a match in World Cup 2023.
After stepping down, Inzamam revealed why he took the decision amid World Cup 2023 in India.
"I got a call that they had formed a five-member committee. We are cricketers and we are available all the time to serve the country. Since I am facing an inquiry, and as is the nature of my job, I should step down and let them conduct the probe," Inzamam told SAMAA TV as quoted by Dawn.
A week after saying all is well in the dressing room and falsifying all allegations by Pakistan media, PCB has formed a five-member committee that will investigate the allegations of conflict of interest and report their findings and recommendations.
"Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has set up a five-member fact-finding committee to investigate allegations in respect of conflict of interest reported in the media pertaining to the team selection process. The committee will submit its report and any recommendations to the PCB Management in an expeditious manner," the board said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Pakistan suffered their fourth defeat in a row in World Cup 2023 last week. It was followed by controversy as Rashid Latif alleged that PCB chairman Ashraf is not picking up Babar’s calls. Later, a Pakistan TV channel leaked a WhatsApp conversation between Babar and PCB’s Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer which led to furore from former cricketers like Shahid Afridi and Waqar Younis.
Amidst controversies and the blame game, Pakistan will take on Bangladesh in their must-win game at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on October 31.
