Following a dominant 3-1 ODI series triumph over New Zealand, England's ODI captain Jos Buttler expressed his team's ambition, stating that they aren't merely looking to defend their ODI World Cup title, but are on a mission to clinch it again. Buttler commended his squad, emphasizing how they rebounded spectacularly after facing defeat in the series opener.
"We've got better and better throughout the series. Everyone said the wicket was slow and it was hard work. The spinners bowled brilliantly. They're valuable cricketers - with bat and ball. We're well positioned. Exciting time to be a player and look forward to those world events," Buttler told the broadcaster after the match.
Dawid Malan, with his splendid century and a near-century score of 96 in the previous game, has been instrumental in England's success. Praising Malan's performance, Buttler mentioned that Malan consistently plays with an intent to make his mark every time he steps onto the pitch.
"He's played fantastically every time he gets his opportunity (Malan). He read the game very very well," Buttler said after the match.
"We're building nicely and we're not trying to defend anything. We're trying to go there and win a World Cup, and we're in the same position as every other team," the captain said about the ODI World Cup prospects.
The provisional team selection had stirred controversy, especially with the noticeable absence of Harry Brook. Critics highlighted Brook's subpar performance in the ODI series, as he failed to cross the 25-run mark in any of his three appearances. Given his current form, the prospects of Brook making a late entry into the main team seem slim.
However, England's batting line-up showcased their prowess, with standout performances like Ben Stokes' remarkable 182 in the 3rd ODI. Malan remained a consistent performer throughout. On the bowling front, Chris Woakes, David Willey, and Moeen Ali have been particularly impressive, clinching wickets regularly.
As England continues to prepare for the upcoming ODI World Cup, their recent success combined with Buttler's leadership and the team's collective prowess hint at an exciting tournament ahead.
