Following India's dominant victory in the Asia Cup 2023, cricket legend and former captain Kapil Dev has expressed confidence in the team's readiness to clinch the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. India showcased a stellar performance in the Asia Cup, especially in the final against Sri Lanka, where they emerged victorious by an impressive 10-wicket margin.
The formidable Indian side bowled out Sri Lanka for a mere 50 runs in just 15.2 overs, with Mohammed Siraj leading the charge against the Lankan batsmen. This triumphant performance has heightened the anticipation for their World Cup opener against Australia on October 08, 2023, scheduled to be held at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
In an interaction with PTI, Kapil emphasized the importance of India making it to the top four in the World Cup. He believes that while preparation and skill are vital, from there on, luck will play a significant role in the team's journey. He encouraged the Men in Blue to play with passion and truly relish the experience of the tournament.
"I think if we can come in top four, that is more important and then it will be about stroke of luck and everything," Kapil said on the sidelines of the launch of the third edition of J&K Open to be held at Jammu Tawi Golf Course from October 4 to 7.
"We can't say right now that we are favourites, of course our team is very good. Heart says something else, mind says no we have to work very hard. I know our team, I don't know about other teams, so I would say it is unfair for me to give a blank answer.
"...as far as India team is concerned, it is ready to play and win the championships...they should play passionately, enjoy themselves," he added.
While Kapil celebrated India's commanding performance in the Asia Cup final, he candidly shared that he had hoped for a more closely-fought match as a cricket enthusiast. Regardless, India's recent form has undoubtedly set the stage for an exciting World Cup campaign.
"...what a fantastic cricket played! As a cricketer I would like to see much close games but as a player, I feel bowl them out for 30 and win. As a spectator, probably a little close matches would have been better," said Kapil.
