As New Zealand gears up for the 3-match ODI series against Bangladesh, interim captain Lockie Ferguson expresses his delight at having Trent Boult back in the squad. This comes as a significant boost, especially in the lead-up to the ODI World Cup 2023. Boult had opted out of the central contract in September 2022, choosing to spend more time with his family. However, he had left the door open for participation in ICC tournaments.
"Clearly a guy with a lot of experience (Boult) and certainly really enjoying him back within the group. Straightaway in England, he came in and he was exceptional. It was challenging to bowl quick. The scores were high in England and his expertise and calmness under pressure was irreplaceable," Ferguson told reporters ahead of the series opener.
Boult's recent successful stint against England has only solidified his reputation. Recognizing this, Ferguson pointed out the invaluable experience that the left-arm pacer brings to the table.
With seasoned player Tim Southee sidelined due to a fractured thumb, possibly missing out on the World Cup, Boult's presence becomes even more crucial for the Kiwis.
"So I guess without Tim (Southee) and Matt Henry, Boult's gonna have a bigger leadership role as he always does. But he's certainly a gem for us and I certainly enjoy playing alongside and, you know, I'm sure if it's swinging tomorrow, he's one of the guys who'll get some swing out of it," he said.
New Zealand faces a challenging opponent in Bangladesh, especially considering their home advantage. The latter has been in formidable form, evidenced by their victory over India in a 3-match series last year. Their mastery over spinning tracks has often posed threats to visiting teams.
"We know how strong Bangladesh are in their home conditions, so it's a good challenge for us against them. And it's my first time playing here, so certainly plenty to learn on my behalf. But the boys are really looking forward to tomorrow and getting underway," said Ferguson.
"Certainly different conditions, but with the experience that we've had in the subcontinent we've got to learn as pace bowlers how to bowl potentially in a different role. It's not always about maybe blowing out and getting wickets, but holding up an end so that perhaps spinners can play more of a role," the fast bowler concluded.
All eyes are now set on the anticipated clash and the invaluable strategies both teams will employ in the run-up to the World Cup.
