A clash that did not have an effect on who reaches the World Cup 2023 semi-final became relevant when Angelo Mathews became the first to get dismissed timed out in the 146-year-old history of international cricket. Mathews’ helmet’s strap came off which led to a further delay and Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan used it to his benefit after a nudge from Najmul Hossain Shanto. After a few heated exchanges in the middle, Bangladesh won the game but there was no end to the controversy. While Shakib did not have any regrets, Mathews in the press conference called it a “disgraceful act”.
“I have done nothing wrong. It’s a disgraceful act from Shakib and Bangladesh. There was no common sense at that moment. This is the lowest an opposition team stooped to in my 15-year international career,” Mathews said in the post-match presentation.
Mathews was asked about the behaviour of Sri Lankan players as they refused the shake hands with Bangladesh players after the latter's three-wicket win at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
“You need to respect people who respect us. They have to respect the game itself. All of us are ambassadors of this beautiful game including the umpires. If you don't respect and not use your common sense, what more can you ask for,” he replied.
Mathews also said that an official statement from the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board would come later on as they have video evidence showing that Mathews still had time when his helmet broke.
“Up until today, I had the utmost respect for him and the Bangladesh team. Obviously, everyone plays to win. If it is within the rules, it is fine but the rule clearly says in my incident today. Within two minutes I was there. We have video evidence. We will put out a statement later on. I am not just making things up but talking with proof. From the time the catch was taken to the time arrived at the crease, I still had five seconds left after breaking my helmet,” the all-rounder further added.
Amidst controversies, Mathews dismissed both Shakib and Shanto with the ball. But they turned out to be consolation wickets as Bangladesh chased down the target of 280 with plenty of overs to spare.
