Star Afghanistan cricketer retires from ODIs at age 24 after team bows out of World Cup

Afghanistan's fast bowler, Naveen-ul-Haq, has decided to step away from One Day International (ODI) cricket following Afghanistan's conclusion in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. The team's journey in the tournament culminated with a five-wicket defeat to South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Naveen, who began his international ODI career in 2016, has been a significant contributor to the Afghanistan cricket team. Over his ODI career, he has claimed 22 wickets in 15 matches. His decision to retire from the 50-over format was communicated through his Instagram account after the match against South Africa, a move aimed at extending his career in other formats and leagues.

"It has been an absolute honour to represent my country and I would like to announce my retirement from the ODI format at end of this World Cup and will continue to wear this blue jersey in T20 cricket for my country. It hasn't been an easy decision to make but to prolong my playing career, I had to take this tough decision would like to thank the Afghanistan Cricket Board and all my fans for their support and unwavering love," Naveen had posted on social media platforms.

Throughout his career, Naveen has also been an active participant in Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket, representing Afghanistan in 27 matches and taking 34 wickets. His versatility and skill have made him a sought-after player in various franchise leagues around the globe, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), Lanka Premier League (LPL), Big Bash League (BBL), and Pakistan Super League (PSL).

In his last ODI match, Naveen struggled to make an impact, conceding 52 runs in 6.3 overs without taking a wicket, as South Africa successfully chased down Afghanistan's target of 245 runs with 15 balls and 5 wickets to spare.

Despite their exit from the World Cup, Afghanistan's performance in the tournament was commendable. They notched up four wins, including remarkable victories against former world champions England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, as well as the Netherlands. These successes earned Afghanistan a respectable sixth place in the World Cup 2023 points table and a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy, signaling their rising stature in international cricket. Afghanistan's campaign, marked by resilience and notable triumphs, leaves the team with a sense of pride and a foundation for future successes.
