Australian cricket icon Ricky Ponting recently defended Pat Cummins' captaincy, underscoring the remarkable achievements of the skipper in 2023, including leading Australia to their first World Test Championship title and retaining the Ashes in England. Despite initial doubts about Cummins' leadership in the 50-over format, Ponting emphasised the skipper's growth and success in both the ODI and Test arenas.

Cummins' leadership skills were particularly evident in the World Cup final in Ahmedabad, where he showcased his tactical acumen. His two key wickets of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were crucial in the match. Australia's strategic field placements and bowling changes under Cummins' command played a significant role in silencing the packed Narendra Modi Stadium.

"I don't know where the negativity's come from because there's been no real basis for it. You look at their overall Test record since he's been captain is outstanding. And now he's a World Cup-winning captain, a World Test Championship-winning captain and a captain who retained the Ashes, so that negativity needs to be put aside now," Ponting told Sky Sports.

"Because there have been a number of moments - think back to the first Test of the Ashes - where he stood up and actually got the job done himself. Under extreme pressure with bat or ball, it's generally been him when his team's in trouble who's changed the course of the game. So he thoroughly deserves every plaudit that comes his way as far as leadership is concerned," he added.

The Australian team's journey in the World Cup was a tale of resilience. They overcame a rocky start, having lost their opening matches against India and South Africa, leaving them at the bottom of the points table. However, Cummins led a remarkable turnaround, securing eight consecutive victories and ultimately clinching their sixth World Cup title.

Questions were initially raised about Cummins' capabilities as an ODI captain, especially following his challenges in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier in the year. Nevertheless, Cummins' leadership evolved impressively throughout the tournament, culminating in a dominant performance in the final.

Cummins' strategic expertise and inspiring leadership were instrumental in orchestrating a flawless performance against India in the final, halting their unbeaten run in a spectacular fashion.

With this victory, Cummins has joined the ranks of Australia's most illustrious ODI World Cup-winning captains. His ability to defy critics and lead his team to triumph in major tournaments reaffirms the resilience and never-say-die spirit of the Australian cricket team. Ponting's endorsement of Cummins' captaincy not only highlights his significant achievements but also acknowledges his growth and potential as a leader in international cricket.
