Former Pakistan cricket captain Rashid Latif commended Mohammed Shami's remarkable performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, highlighting him as India's most distinguished player in the tournament. Despite missing the initial four games, Shami emerged as a formidable force following Hardik Pandya's injury, swiftly making his mark in the competition.
Shami's return was nothing short of spectacular, as he seized a five-wicket haul against New Zealand in Dharamsala, followed by an exceptional 7-57 in the semifinal against the same team in Mumbai. This performance set a record for the best figures by an Indian bowler in One Day Internationals.
Ending the tournament as the leading wicket-taker, Shami amassed 24 wickets in just seven matches. His average stood at an outstanding 10.70, coupled with a remarkable strike rate of 12.20. His consistent excellence led to him achieving three five-wicket hauls, making him a crucial player in India's journey through the World Cup.
Latif, as reported by PTI, acknowledged Shami's significant role, asserting that he was the standout player for India in the World Cup. He reflected on India's defeat in the final, suggesting that psychological factors might have played a part.
"You look at the way he has come up and done so well. He was in my opinion the standout player for India in this World Cup," Latif said.
Despite the loss, Latif believed that the current Indian team had the potential to clinch the World Cup title, while also commending the Australian team for their mental fortitude and resilience.
"Maybe it is just a psychological thing with the Indian players. This team was worthy of winning the World Cup final but all credit to the Australians for showing once again how mentally tough and organised they are in their sports," Latif added.
Latif's comments underscore the importance of mental strength in cricket, especially in high-stakes tournaments like the World Cup, and highlight the impressive skills and impact of Shami in the international cricket arena.
