Afghanistan's promising start at 83-1 in their 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup fixture vs Bangladesh was cut short as they spiralled to 156 all out, predominantly due to the spin mastery of Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, culminating in a six-wicket defeat.
The challenge of navigating through spin bowling amplifies for Afghanistan as they gear up to face hosts India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. India's reputable spin trifecta - Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravichandran Ashwin - recently showcased their expertise on a spinner-friendly surface in Chennai.
Afghanistan's skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi, who encountered difficulties against spin, ultimately succumbing to Mehidy in the Dharamshala encounter, remains confident about his squad's capability against spinners.
"We encounter proficient spinners during our training sessions. Considering Rashid, Nabi, Noor, and Mujeeb, we face them routinely. Thus, our proficiency against spin is commendable. The Bangladesh match was a stumble."
"A single match doesn't define our prowess against spin. We're optimistic about countering spinners more effectively and striving for holistic improvement in upcoming matches," Shahidi expressed during the preliminary press interaction.
Despite the initial setback against Bangladesh, Shahidi’s conviction in his team, which he rates superior to the teams of the 2015 and 2019 editions, remains unwavering. This comes ahead of their New Delhi fixture, where a record-breaking 754 runs were amassed in 94.5 overs - an unprecedented feat in ODI World Cup history.
"Indeed, I asserted our potential as a formidable batting contingent paired with an adept spin attack. However, a singular facet won't guarantee victories; comprehensive performances are essential. While our batting faltered against Bangladesh, our faith remains intact. We possess the calibre and aspiration to bounce back in ensuing encounters," he elaborated.
Whilst the tournament is still in its infancy, the manner of their loss to Bangladesh might trigger anxiety. However, Shahidi reassures that the team's spirit remains high, with eight fixtures still on the horizon.
"The essence lies in recuperating post a defeat. For the squad and me, this ethos is paramount. It's an extensive tournament, encompassing eight additional matches. Dwelling on bygones may taint upcoming matches."
"We've shelved the past game. Our focus is now honed on forthcoming matches. The ambiance within the team is optimistic, and our gaze is firmly set on potential victories," Shahidi concluded.
