Team India captain Rohit Sharma dropped a major hint on Shreyas Iyer's progress as the latter continues rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. During an event in the U.S. on August 6 (Sunday), the 'Hitman' was asked about Iyer's progress and availability for the 2023 ODI World Cup and the Indian skipper gave a positive update. Rohit affirmed that Iyer is recovering well from his injury and continues to remain on track to regain full fitness. The Indian captain didn't give a definite timeline for Iyer's comeback.

“Shreyas Iyer is on the track to full fitness, so fingers crossed for World Cup,” Rohit said during the event that was streamed live in Instagram.

Iyer has begun batting in the net and there are videos of the Indian batter on social media where he can be seen sharpening his craft in the NCA nets. As per a report in Cricbuzz earlier, Iyer is likely to miss the 2023 Asia Cup which is scheduled to be played before the ODI World Cup and the three-match ODI series against Australia.

The right-handed batter underwent back surgery earlier in the year after recurring injuries. Before his injury, Iyer had become an indispensable figure in India's batting line-up, having made the No.4 position his own. The last time Iyer played for India was against Australia in a Test match in March earlier in the year. The stylish batter last played an ODI in January earlier in the year.

In Iyer's absence, who has scored 1,631 runs in 42 ODIs at an average of 46.60 with the help of two centuries and 14 fifties, India has have struggled to find a solid batter at the No.4 position. Suryakumar Yadav has received opportunities in Iyer's absence but the right-handed batter hasn't played any significant knocks in ODIs.
