Glenn Maxwell pulled off a heist with his blistering double century during the thrilling ODI World Cup clash against Afghanistan at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on November 7, Tuesday.
Batting first Afghanistan rode in Ibrahim Zadran's centurion knock to post a competitive total of 291/5. In return Australia suffered a batting collapse and were teetering at 93/7 but what happened next will be remembered for years. Maxwell turned Australia's troubleshooter and kept taking Afghanistani bowlers to cleaners despite grappling with severe cramps. Undeterred by the adversity and pain he was playing in, Maxwell did the impossible as he went on to crack a record-breaking double century to help Australia win the match by three wickets.
Right after the post, Maxwell thanked everyone for the love and support showered on him.
"Pretty overwhelmed with all the love. Thank you so much to everyone that has sent messages,” he wrote in a heartfelt post on X.
The star all-rounder also commended his skipper Pat Cummins, with whom he stitched a match-winning partnership to complete the stunning chase.
Maxwell also apologized to Cummins for refusing to run between the wickets due to the cramps he was battling with enroute to his breathtaking knock.
"Sorry I knocked back a couple," his post added.
Riding on this win Australia also made their way to the ODI World Cup semifinals. After the victory over Afghanistan, the five-time champions are now on third in the World Cup points table with 12 points. They will now lock horns with Bangladesh in their last league match on November 11.
