Netherlands' men's team's head coach Ryan Cook has urged subcontinent teams for few games ahead of ODI World Cup 2023 in India later this year. The statement came in the post-match press conference after Netherlands' 128-run defeat against Sri Lanka in the final of ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2023 at Harare Sports Club on July 9.
Netherlands secured a place in the quadrennial event as they finished runners-up in the recently concluded World Cup Qualifiers where they stunned West Indies in a super over clash.
The Dutch team will start their World Cup campaign against Pakistan at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on October 6. They will play all nine other teams in the mega event. Ahead of the ultimate ODI challenge, Cook wants his players to adapt to the conditions.
"We'll go back home and try and put a couple of fixtures together. They don't have any at the moment on the international circuit. This is a call out to anyone who wants to play us. We'd love to have a fixture or two. Our guys have not been to the subcontinent many times before. It would be good to have some fixtures somewhere in the subcontinent as well," Cook said in the press conference.
Netherlands have only played a three-ODI series in Doha against Afghanistan in last two years. In addition, Cook has invited sponsors for the mega event.
“The 50-over World Cup, in particular, presents an opportunity of playing India and other countries in India. That brings a lot of eyeballs to the screens. Hopefully we will be able to pick up a sponsor or two, and bring a bit more revenue into the game. It will take a bit of work from our end, and here's a full invitation to any sponsors out there who feel like being on the front and the side of the shirt in the World Cup.," Cook further added.
It looks unlikely that India will invite Netherlands to play as their schedule is packed already. Even the second-string side will be busy playing in the Asian Games 2023.
