Following World Cup semifinal defeat against India, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson expressed his admiration for Virat Kohli after the batting juggernaut surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's record for most ODI centuries. Williamson lauded Kohli's incredible achievement, calling him the best in the world.
Virat Kohli cemented his legacy as one of the greatest ODI batsmen of all time by breaking Tendulkar's long-standing record of most centuries in the format. Kohli notched a historic 50th ODI ton besting Tendulkar's 49-hundred record in the One Day Internationals. Producing an exceptional knock, Kohli scored a sensational 117 runs to mark his third century of the ongoing ODI World Cup. He also crossed the 700-run mark in the tournament to break Tendulkar's another big record of most runs in a single edition of the ODI World Cup. Kohli's remarkable knock propelled India to a 70-run victory after India posted a mammoth total for New Zealand to chase.
Meanwhile, Williamson, in the post-match press conference, was asked about Kohli's record-breaking knock to which he said,"(I am) trying to find the words to describe it really, and not just that, actually the way he goes about it, it is about winning games for his team and he is getting close and there is a lot of attention and that comes with a lot of his success. He is the best, isn’t he? And he seems to be getting better, which is a worry for opposition all around the world, but you admire it.”
India rode on brilliant centuries from Kohli (117 off 113) and Shreyas Iyer to post a mammoth total of 397/4. While Kohli etched his name in cricket history by scoring a record-breaking 50th ODI century, Iyer scored a robust 105 off 70. New Zealand, in response, managed to score 327 all out in 48.5 overs, largely due to a solid 181-run partnership between Kane Williamson, who scored 69 runs, and Daryl Mitchell with a remarkable 134-run knock. However, their efforts were overshadowed by Mohammed Shami's outstanding bowling, as he ended with figures of 7/57.
