Team India captain Rohit Sharma is back in the limelight with high expectations for this year's World Cup. After a stellar performance in the 2019 World Cup, where he led the run charts, Sharma has once again been pegged by cricket maestros, including Virender Sehwag, to be the game-changer for India.
Endorsements of Sharma's prowess aren't limited. Aakash Chopra, another former Indian cricketer, envisages Sharma scoring not just one, but two centuries, and even a 'daddy hundred' during the tournament. Adding to the chorus is Virender Sehwag, a cricket legend known for his fearless gameplay.
In a candid interaction with the International Cricket Council (ICC), Sehwag elucidated his faith in openers, especially in Indian conditions, to amass a significant chunk of runs. Among these, he singles out Rohit Sharma as the standout player, emphasizing Sharma's elevated energy and performance levels when it's World Cup season.
Furthermore, Sehwag didn't mince words in stating that Sharma would not just be contributing with his runs but would be the pivotal "difference maker" for the Indian squad.
"I think lots of openers because India has a good wicket, so openers will get more opportunities. I think if I want to pick one, I think Rohit Sharma. There are a couple of names, but I know I'm Indian and I should pick Indian, so Rohit Sharma," said Sehwag.
"I'll pick Rohit Sharma, because when World Cups comes, his energy level, his performance goes up. So I'm sure that and this time he's a captain also. So I'm sure that he will make a difference and he will get a lot of runs," he added.
Rewinding to 2019, Sharma's remarkable journey saw him scoring an astounding 648 runs in just nine matches, boasting an average of 81. His bat danced to five hundreds, propelling India to the semi-finals. Such achievements etch a player's name in golden letters in cricket chronicles.
Fast-forwarding to this year, Sharma’s form seems invincible. Over the 16 matches he's played across all formats, he’s amassed 923 runs, maintaining an average of 48.57. With such impressive stats, it's no wonder that Sharma is the cynosure of all eyes, with fans and pundits eagerly anticipating his on-field magic in the World Cup.
