India is eagerly awaiting updates on Hardik Pandya's fitness in the lead-up to their match against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on November 2 (Thursday). Pandya suffered an ankle injury during a game against Bangladesh on October 19 when he awkwardly landed on his left ankle, causing ligament damage. As a result, he has been sidelined for two matches against New Zealand and England.
"The medical team is looking at that and are very much in touch with Hardik and the NCA as well. We're hoping to get an update in a couple of days," bowling coach Paras Mhambrey said after India's win over England.
Hardik Pandya injury
During the ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh on October 19th at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, Team India and its supporters were left concerned when Hardik had to abruptly leave the field. This happened during the 9th over of Bangladesh's innings, and incidentally, it was Hardik's first over. While trying to intercept the ball using his foot, he slipped, leading to an alarming injury to his left foot.
Teammates, especially Virat Kohli, immediately came to his aid, helping him stand. The distress was evident on Hardik's face, and he avoided putting pressure on his injured foot. The team's physiotherapist swiftly attended to him, applying substantial support to his shin and ankle after a significant pause in the game.
Despite receiving on-field treatment, Hardik's attempt at a trial run showed he was still in immense pain. After bowling only three balls and conceding two boundaries, he chose to head back to the pavilion for further medical attention.
To compensate for Pandya's absence and maintain the team's balance, India made two changes to their playing XI. They included Mohammed Shami and Suryakumar Yadav while leaving out Shardul Thakur. Mohammed Shami has performed exceptionally well since his return to the team, taking five wickets against New Zealand and delivering a remarkable performance with figures of 4 for 22 in seven overs against England.
India is unlikely to rush Pandya back into the playing eleven. They are currently on the brink of qualifying for the semi-finals, and their team has been performing well even in Pandya's absence. Following their match against Sri Lanka on November 2, India's next fixture is against South Africa in Kolkata on November 5. This strategic approach ensures that Pandya has adequate time to recover and regain full fitness before returning to competitive cricket.
