India versus Australia ODI World Cup 2023 final ended in heartbreak for the host country as they were beaten by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) had announced an overall USD 10 million (approximately Rs 83 crore) pot for the ODI World Cup 2023
Australia, the winner of this prestigious tournament, will get USD 4 million. Rohit Sharma's India will get USD 2 million, while the losing semifinalists South Africa and New Zealand will have to settle for USD 800,000 each.
The six teams that failed to make it to the semifinals — Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and the Netherlands — have been rewarded with USD 100,000 each.
The distribution of this prize money is not confined to the men's tournament.
Demonstrating the ICC's dedication to gender equality in sports, the same prize fund will be given to the winners of the ICC ODI Women's World Cup 2025. This significant resolution was made during the Annual Conference held in Durban, South Africa, in July 2023.
In the final, India were sent in to bat first against the five-time champions. Skipper Rohit Sharma gave his team the perfect start, but he fell to Glenn Maxwell. He managed to score 47 off 31 balls, with Kohli scoring 54 before losing his wicket to a brilliant delivery that bounced a shade extra and Virat Kohli (54), trying to push it towards the empty cover area, was played on in the process.
KL Rahul's composed 66 off 107 is worth its weight in gold but he would have ideally liked to bat till the end as the whole India batting unit was dismissed for the first time in the tournament, setting a target of 241 for the victory.
In the run chase of 241, Australia were reduced to 47/3 despite a flying start. Travis Head kept on firing from the other end while Marnus Labuschagne soaked up the pressure. Head scored a record-breaking 137 whereas Labuschagne remained unbeaten for 58 as Australia chased down the target in 43 overs and won their sixth ODI World Cup title.
