Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri expressed his admiration for Glenn Maxwell's exceptional performance against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, November 8. Despite Australia facing a challenging situation at 91 for seven in 18.3 overs while chasing a formidable target of 292, Maxwell played an impressive unbeaten innings of 201 off 128 balls, comprising 21 fours and 10 sixes.
During the match, Maxwell partnered with Pat Cummins, who contributed 12 runs off 68 balls with one four, resulting in a crucial 202-run partnership. Shastri drew parallels between Maxwell's innings and the iconic performance of 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, who played a similarly remarkable knock against Zimbabwe at the Nevill Ground in Turnbridge Wells.
Reflecting on Maxwell's resilience in coping with the oppressive Mumbai weather and the resulting cramps, Shastri compared the innings to Kapil Dev's legendary performance in 1983. In a post on an unspecified platform, Shastri wrote, "Stunning. Reminds me of Kaps of 83."
Maxwell acknowledged the challenges he faced during the match, citing the humid weather and his lack of adequate preparation as reasons for his cramps. He emphasized the significance of the opportunities he received, especially after Mujeeb Ur Rahman dropped a catch in the 22nd over, enabling Maxwell to capitalize and contribute significantly to Australia's three-wicket victory over Afghanistan.
Speaking to the broadcasters, Maxwell shared, "Although I had my fair share of chances, I am proud of making the most of them tonight. I regret not having exercised enough in the heat, which led to my struggles with cramps during the game."
He also revealed his efforts to recover, stating, "Given the conditions today, I felt the impact of the heat while fielding. I plan to take some time to recuperate and ensure I get the necessary movement to prevent such issues in the future."
