Ajay Jadeja was Afghanistan's mentor in ODI World Cup 2023.

ACB CEO has revealed that Jadeja didn't take any payment for mentoring Afghanistan.

Afghanistan defied expectations with a dream run in last year's ODI World Cup held in India. While their performance in familiar Indian conditions was anticipated to be strong, few believed they could outshine established cricketing giants. Led by captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afghanistan surprised the cricketing world. Their journey began with setbacks – losses to Bangladesh and India. However, they didn't falter for long.  A resounding victory against the defending champions, England, marked a remarkable turnaround. This momentum continued as they triumphed over Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well.

Afghanistan even challenged Australia, putting up a strong fight. However, a double-century by Glenn Maxwell swung the match in favor of the eventual champions. Despite the close call, Afghanistan finished the tournament on a high note, securing a commendable sixth-place finish on the points table.

Jadeja Credited for Afghanistan's World Cup Success

Much of the praise for Afghanistan's audacious performance in the ODI World Cup went to former Indian batsman Ajay Jadeja. He joined the team as a mentor just before the tournament began, and his influence proved significant. Even during the competition, Afghanistan's head coach, Jonathon Trott, publicly acknowledged Jadeja's contribution to the team's success.

"I think Ajay brings a lot of experience having played a lot of cricket in India. He's always a good sounding board with regards to conditions, venues and also the other subcontinent teams that we've played against," Trott said.

Ajay Jadeja is poised to receive further accolades following a recent disclosure by Naseeb Khan, CEO of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). The ACB CEO shared that Jadeja declined any payment for his role as a mentor.

"If you play well, that's all the money & reward I need," Jadeja told ACB.

Afghanistan Soar in T20 World Cup, Reach Super 8s

Building on their impressive performance in last year's ODI World Cup, Afghanistan continues to shine in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup. They've secured a spot in the Super 8s from Group C, even knocking out cricket powerhouse New Zealand in the process. Currently, Afghanistan leads the group standings, with co-hosts West Indies trailing closely behind.

Captain Rashid Khan's men kicked off their campaign with a dominant display, crushing T20 World Cup newcomers Uganda by a massive 125 runs. This momentum continued as they pulled off a sensational upset against New Zealand. After setting a target of 159 runs, Afghanistan's bowlers dismantled the New Zealand batting lineup, dismissing them for a mere 75 runs and securing an emphatic 84-run victory. Their winning streak continued with a victory over Papua New Guinea, officially booking their ticket to the Super 8s.
