Mitchell Marsh-led Australian cricket team picked up a big 28-run win over Najmul Hossain Shanto's Bangladesh by DLS Method after rain played spoilsport and stopped the match proceedings in the second inning during match 44 of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 which was being played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, on June 21 (Friday). Pat Cummin set the real highlight of the match by taking his first-ever hat-trick.
Cummins' Hat-trick
Cummins became the second Australian bowler to take a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup history. He joined the list with Brett Lee, who took a hat-trick in the inaugural season of the T20 World Cup. Both of them recorded this feat during the clash against Bangladesh. However, it took 17 years for another Australian bowler to claim a hat-trick in T20 World Cup.
Pat Cummins' epic hat-trick came across two overs. He took Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan's wickets by the end of the 18th over and when he came to bowl the 20th over he dismissed Towhid Hirdoy on the very first ball to claim his first-ever T20I hat-trick. He is also the fourth Australian to take a T20I hat-trick and 7th bowler overall in history with a T20 World Cup hat-trick.
Cummins speaks about his hat-trick
The star pacer revealed that he did not know he had taken a hat-trick until he saw it on the big screen. He also talked about joining the list with Ashton Agar and Nathan Ellis as Australians with T20I hat-tricks.
“I had no idea (on the hat-trick), then saw when it came up on the screen. Set batter in, playing the innings, you never know how it'll go about, so that was a big wicket (on Hridoy's wicket) and happy to have restricted them. Few (hat-tricks) in juniors, never for Australia. Agar and Ellis, on the bench, have hat-tricks, joined their club. It's pretty awesome to tick that off. Good club to be part of. Fairly polished performance, the goal was to win and we did well with the run-rate, we'll need to continue with the momentum going ahead in the Super 8s,” said Cummins in the post-match presentation.
