Mitchell Marsh-led Australian cricket team defeated Najmul Hossain Shanto's Bangladesh by 28 runs (DLS Method) after rain stopped play in the second inning during match 44 of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 which was being played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, on June 21 (Friday). This was a historic win for Australia as for the first time ever, a team has recorded 8 consecutive wins in the T20 World Cups. The previous record was held by Team India and England for 7 consecutive victories.
Pat Cummins takes hat-trick
Pat Cummins took a hat-trick against Afghanistan and became the second Australian after Brett Lee to get this feat in front of their names in the T20 World Cup 2024. He dismissed Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan by the end of the 18th over and got the wicket of Towhid Hirdoy on the very first ball when he returned to bowl the 20th over. He became the seventh bowler to take a T20 World Cup hat-trick.
AUS restrict BAN on 140/8
Cummins was the star of the show as he took three wickets in his four-over spell. He got good support from Adam Zampa, who took two wickets. Meanwhile, Micthell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, and Glenn Maxwell took one wicket each. Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 41 off 36 balls and Towhid Hirdoy played a 40-run knock off 28 balls. Both of them were the star picks from the Bangladesh batting line-up.
Rain stops play
During the second innings, Australia's innings was interrupted by rain on many occasions after which the officials decided to call off the match. Australia could only score 100/2 in 11.2 over but it was 28 more runs as per the required DLS score. So they were handed the win and crucial two points. Warner scored a 35-ball 53.
