Bangladesh suffered a comprehensive 60-run defeat against India in their warm-up clash ahead of T20 World Cup 2024. While Najmul Hossain Shanto-led Bangladesh continue to struggle, their in-form left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam suffered a blow to his left hand.
Shoriful bowled in the final over of the innings. Hardik Pandya hit the fifth ball down the ground and Shoriful got his hand to it. There was some swelling visible on his hand immediately and he left the field immediately. The last ball of the innings was bowled by Tanzim Hasan Sakib.
After the defeat, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury revealed that he got six sitches on his hand.
"Shoriful suffered a split injury between the index and middle finger of his left hand while trying to stop a ball in his last over," Chowdhury said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
"After initial medical attention, he was taken to Nassau University Medical Centre. The hand surgeon administered six stitches. We will visit him again after two days. We will know then how much time it will take for Shoriful to return."
Shoriful was impressive with the new ball taking the wicket of Sanju Samson. Opening the innings alongside Rohit Sharma, Samson got out lbw as he failed to pick the in-swinger. He conceded 26 runs from 3.5 overs.
Bangladesh’s campaign opener
Shoriful has a total of six days to recover before Bangladesh kick off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. Placed in Group D, Bangladesh will take on Sri Lanka at Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas on June 7. Their second match is against June 10 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York.
Taskin injured too
Meanwhile, there is a question mark over Taskin Ahmed’s availability as well. Taskin did not take part in the warm-up game. He is currently recovering from a rib fracture. In case he doesn't recover, Hasan Mahmud has been added to the reserves.
