Rahul Dravid, whose stint as India's head coach came to an end after the conclusion of T20 World Cup 2024, revealed his coaching philosophy. He said that he preferred stability in team selection and aimed to support captain Rohit Sharma in implementing his vision for the team. Dravid's tenure ended on a high note with India's victory at the T20 World Cup 2024. This win marked India's second T20 World Cup title after 2007. His tenure was marked by overall success. The Indian team reached the finals of both the 2023 Cricket World Cup and the World Test Championship under his guidance. Though they fell short of the trophy on both occasions, losing to Australia in the finals, these results showcase the strong performance of the team under Dravid's coaching.
"I'm someone who actually likes continuity and don't like to chop and change too many things because I believe that creates a lot of instability and doesn't create very good environment," Dravid said in a video posted by BCCI.
"I feel that I am a part of the team whose responsibility is to create the right professional, safe, secure environment that doesn't really have a fear of failure as such but is challenging enough to push people. That has always been my endeavour," Dravid added.
Rahul Dravid, besides mentioning his coaching approach, also spoke about the challenges he faced during his initial period. He took over as coach during a time when players were recovering from COVID-19, making it a difficult adjustment. Additionally, he admitted he wasn't prepared to work with so many captains (six in total) – something he hadn't anticipated when taking on the role.
"One of the things that we really had to manage, especially in the early part of my coaching tenure here with India. We were at the back-end of the Covid restrictions. We really had to manage their workloads through all the three different formats," Dravid further stated.
"It was definitely something that I hadn't envisaged, or not something that I thought about, but it just sort of organically happened," Dravid concluded.
