Bangladesh's campaign for the T20 World Cup 2024 have suffered a major setback as their star bowler Ebadot Hossain has been ruled out of the showpeice tournament which is set to start from June 2. Ebadot is deemed unfit due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury and will miss the tournament altogether.
This news comes as a disappointment for both Ebadot and the Bangladesh cricket team.
Bangaldesh's T20 World Cup campaign takes a hit, Ebadot ruled out
Ebadot had previously expressed his desire for a quick recovery and participation in the World Cup. However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board's chief physician, Debashish Chowdhury, confirmed Ebadot's unavailability on April 10. He further dashed any hopes of a last-minute comeback, stating that the recovery timeframe for such an injury is typically eight to twelve months, with a minimum of ten months needed. Ebadot's surgery took place in December, meaning a return to competitive cricket wouldn't be possible until October at the earliest.
"No way (Ebadot can make a comeback before the World T20). We are not even thinking about it. It does not go (his comeback) in that time frame (before the World Cup). It takes eight to 12 months but at least you need 10 months. He was operated in December, so it will be at least October when he can make a comeback. He can make a comeback a bit earlier but certainly not in the World T20," Debashish said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Trouble galore for Bangladesh
While Ebadot Hossain's absence is a major blow, Bangladesh's worries don't end there. Injuries have also hampered the availability of two other key players, Soumya Sarkar and Taijul Islam.
Soumya's participation has been under question after he hurt his knee in a collision with an advertisement board during an ODI against Sri Lanka. Similarly, Taijul's knee injury occurred during the opening Test against the same team.
However, despite the ticking clock towards the T20 World Cup, Bangladesh Cricket Board's chief physician, Debashish Chowdhury, remains optimistic about their timely return as they might be seen feature in the home series against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe are set to visit in May for a five-match T20I series, initiating Bangladesh's preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

"Soumya sustained a ligament injury during the Sri Lanka series after he hit the billboard and we have spoken with the best knee surgeon in our country and planned to go for conservative management. It will take four to six weeks to do conservative management. Currently, he is doing rehabilitation and doing well and we are hopeful that he can manage it without an operation. In that case, you have to give time. He has already passed four weeks and there are another two weeks to go but you can understand that there is a Zimbabwe series and the team needs to be declared. Right now he is working on regaining his strength," Debashish told Cricbuzz.
"Taijul got a knee injury as well but he played with that injury. He got injured in the first Test while fielding and now rehabilitation is very important and both Soumya and Taijul's cases are quite similar. The time frame is quite close as both the injuries happened in between one week. They will take some time to recover and it is becoming difficult for us as we are running against time. I think both will be ok (before the Zimbabwe series) but we are not sure about the time frame they would require to get fully fit," he concluded.
