T20 World Cup champion Team India members arrived in Mumbai and participated in a open bus victory parade after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday (July 4). The players then headed to the Wankhede Stadium, where they were honored by the BCCI. Following the celebrations in Mumbai, the players departed for their homes. On Friday (July 5), Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shivam Dube, and Suryakumar Yadav met Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. The CM honored the four players at the Maharashtra assembly. Rohit Sharma humorously trolled Suryakumar Yadav while speaking in the assembly, remarking that he would have dropped him from the team had Suryakumar Yadav dropped that catch.
"After Surya caught the ball, he told me that the ball sat in his hand. Thank goodness, it sat in his hand. Otherwise, I would have dropped him out," Rohit Sharma said.
The final over of the T20 World Cup final was a nail-biting affair. South Africa needed 16 runs to win with just 6 balls remaining. The dangerous looking David Miller smashed the ball towards the long-off boundary. It seemed certain to be a six and swing the momentum in South Africa's favor. However, Suryakumar Yadav had other plans. He came sprinting in from long-off, not only saving a certain six but also incredibly pouching the catch to dismiss Miller. This brilliant display of athleticism effectively ended South Africa's hopes. Earlier in the innings, Virat Kohli had laid the foundation for India's total with a crucial 76 runs off 59 balls. He was named Player of the Final for his knock. Axar Patel also chipped in with a valuable 47, helping India reach a total of 176/7. South Africa's chase began poorly as they lost their openers cheaply at a score of just 12 runs. Quinton de Kock and Tristun Stubbs provided some fightback with a 58-run partnership for the third wicket, but ultimately it wasn't enough as India clinched the victory by 7 runs.
South Africa's chase seemed promising thanks to Heinrich Klaasen's quickfire 52 off just 27 balls. Their hopes then rested heavily on David Miller. The powerful left-hander played well but was unfortunately dismissed after a spectacular catch by Suryakumar Yadav. In celebration of India's victory, there was a shower of money. The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, announced a cash reward of Rs 11 crore for four Mumbai cricketers alongwith Rohit sharma. Additionally, the BCCI presented the team with a Rs 125 crore cash prize on Thursday, July 4. To top it off, the ICC also awarded them a cheque of approximately Rs 20.42 crore. Notably, India remained unbeaten throughout the entire tournament.
