Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team gave legendary Rahul Dravid a winning farewell by winning the T20 World Cup 2024 after defeating South Africa in the Final which took place at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, on June 29 (Saturday). Dravid's tenure as the Indian head coach comes to an end with the addition of another precious silverware in the BCCI cabinet. This mega tournament was his last assignment with the Men in Blue and he was also seen joking about it later with the journalists.
Rahul Dravid jokes about being unemployed
The icon said that he would be able to move on from this historic win really soon, in fact by next week itself as he would be an unemployed person by then. He also asked them about if there is any offer. "I will be able to move on quickly from this win, next week I will be unemployed (laughs). I don't want to think too far ahead, but yes, I hope, I will be able to move on. I think that's what life is all about," said Dravid while addressing the media.
India came really close to winning the ODI World Cup 2023 but fell short in the Finals. This is why this victory is much more sweeter. There is still no confirmation about who will be Dravid's successor but Gautam Gambhir is being considered as the front-runner.
India clinch second T20 World Cup 2024
The Indian cricket team put an end to their 11-year-long trophy drought after winning their second T20 World Cup title. The Men in Blue became the first undefeated team in history to win the prestigious trophy and also the first side to win all white-ball ICC trophies (T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup, Champions Trophy) twice.
Rohit Sharma elected to bat first after winning the toss and the decision turned out to be good as India managed to post 176/7 on the board with the help of an amazing half-century from star batter Virat Kohli and great cameo knocks from Axar Patel and Shivam Dube. Then during the second innings, Heinrich Klaasen also smashed a blazing fifty and almost took the game away from the Indian team. However, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya's heroics helped India come back into the match and win it by 7 runs.
