The buzz around the next Indian head coach has only gotten higher after Rahul Dravid's tenure came to an end with a historic win in the just-concluded T20 World Cup 2024 Final against South Africa. Currently, there's no name announced by the Indian cricket board, BCCI but now it is only a matter of few days. BCCI secretary Jay Shah revealed that CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names for the new head coach and selector position.
Jay Shah on next Indian head coach
Jay Shah revealed that they have already shortlisted two candidates for both the selector and coach positions. He also revealed that legendary cricketer VVS Laxman will be the coach for the Indian side that will be traveling to Zimbabwe for five T20Is. This will also be the first captaincy assignment for Shubman Gill in International cricket.
"Both coach and selector appointment will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but new coach will join from Sri Lanka series," Shah was quoted as saying by PTI.
BCCI President on Gautam Gambhir becoming next head coach
Gautam Gambhir is being considered as the front-runner to become Rahul Dravid's succesor as the new Indian head coach. However, there is still no confirmation on this potential appointment. BCCI President Roger Binny also chose not to reveal whether Gambhir will take over the role or not.
"Nothing concrete has come yet. Gautam Gambhir has a lot of experience. He has worked with teams. He played Test matches, ODIs, T20s. Let's see," Binny said in a media interaction after India won T20 World Cup 2024.
