Cricket legend Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who played a key role in India's 1983 World Cup victory, has expressed his shock over India's T20 World Cup squad selection. India's T20 World Cup 2024's squad, announced by the BCCI selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar, has sparked discussions, particularly the omission of Chennai Super Kings' captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Srikkanth questioned the inclusion of Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans, highlighting Gill's recent struggles with the bat. He suggested that other players might have been more deserving based on current form.
It's important to note that team selection is a complex process, and selectors consider various factors beyond recent performances. The final call rests with the committee, and fans have the right to analyse and discuss the choices.
Srikkanth slams Gill's selection over Gaikwad
"Gill playing ahead of Rutu baffles me," Srikkanth exclaimed on his YouTube channel. "He is out of form, and Rutu has had a better T20I career than Gill. Gill will keep failing, and he'll keep getting chances. He has the favoritism of the selectors; this is just too much favoritism," Krishnamachari Srikkanth said during a conversation on his You Tube channel.
Notably, Shubman Gill isn't in India's main squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. However, Srikkanth, a World Cup winner as both a player (1983) and selector (2011), believes his strong performances in the IPL could have warranted a main slot. Yashasvi Jaiswal ultimately earned the nod as Rohit Sharma's opening partner, with Virat Kohli batting at number three. Ruturaj Gaikwad's impressive IPL season, including his run towards 500 runs, has many wondering about his exclusion. He hasn't played for India since December and was the leading scorer in the recent T20I series against Australia.
