The ICC T20 World Cup is gearing up for the crucial Super 8 stage, where the top teams from the group round battle it out for ultimate glory. However, a potential issue with the tournament structure has come to light, raising concerns about fairness in the later stages. Australia, currently dominating Group B with an undefeated record, finds itself in an interesting predicament. Despite securing the top spot in their group, they are pre-assigned the ‘B2’ position in the Super Eights based on a predetermined seeding system. This decision hasn't gone down well with star Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, highlighting potential flaws in the format.
The issue lies in how opponents for the Super Eights are chosen. Seedings, rather than first-round group standings, determine who faces whom. As a consequence, Australia, despite winning all their group matches, will advance as "B2". This predetermined system could potentially lead to a scenario where three group winners end up in the same Super Eight pool, depending on the outcome of Afghanistan's upcoming match against the West Indies. The remaining group winner would be paired with India in a different pool.
Mitchell Starc not happy with Australia's pre-seeding of Super 8
“I think there's a question to be asked about pre-seeding. I'm not sure I'm a fan of that,” Starc said in a press conference following Australia's win against Scotland in their final group match.
While Team India topped Group A, the pre-determined seeding system threw a curveball at their potential Super Eight opponents. Originally, they might have faced England, who finished second in Group B. However, due to Australia's pre-assigned "B2" slot, India will now lock horns with a formidable opponent – Mitchell Marsh's Australian team – in a highly anticipated Super Eight clash.
Australia's path to the Super Eight has been dominant, showcasing their championship aspirations. They began with a convincing 39-run win over Oman, followed by a strong 36-run victory against arch-rivals England. Their dominance continued as they steamrolled Namibia, chasing down a meager target in just 5.4 overs. Despite a shaky fielding performance in their final group match, they secured a tense victory with just two balls to spare.
