Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team are officially out of the Super 8 on the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 after the rain washed out a match between the United States and Ireland in Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium on June 14, Friday.
This is the first time in the history of the tournament that ‘Men in Green’ got out of the mega event without qualifying for the playoffs. The reason behind Pakistan's early exit in the tournament was their performance. They just won a single game out of their three outings. The side have lost the opener against the United States and after that, they lost to arch-rivals India in the USA.
Three groups in the Pakistan team
Now a source revealed that the World Cup-bound team is divided into three groups, one was with skipper Babar Azam, the second one was led by Shaheen Shah Afridi and the third one was led by Mohammad Rizwan and that's the reason behind their poor performance.
"There are three groups in the team, one led by Babar Azam, the second one by Shaheen Shaheen Afridi and the third one by Muhammad Rizwan. Add to this mix the return of seniors like Muhammad Aamir and Imad Wasim and the recipe was ready for a World Cup disaster," a source close to the team told PTI.
The source also revealed that adding Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim to the squad added more confusion for captain Babar Azam. He also revealed that some players do not even talk to each other.
"The return of Imad and Amir added to the confusion as it was difficult for Babar to get any worthwhile performances from both of them as they had not played top level domestic or international cricket for a long while now except in franchise based leagues.
"There were even instances where some players were not talking to each other and a few of them even tried to appease all the group leaders in the team," added the source.
Pakistan will now face Ireland for their last match of the T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled to be played at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium which is most likely to be washed out due to rain in Florida.
