Phil Salt won the Player of the Match for his stunning half-century against West Indies that helped England pick up a comfortable 8-wicket win in match 42 of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia, on June 20 (Thursday). Apart from Salt, Jonny Bairstow played a great knock too, and helped the English side win their first Super 8 match of this mega tournament. Bairstow missed his fifty by 2 runs but was extremely crucial in the victory for the Three Lions.
Phil Salt on Jonny Bairstow
Salt said Bairstow helped in taking the pressure off him when the boundaries had dried up and played a really crucial role in their victory tonight. He also expressed his happiness in contributing to the team's win.
I like batting here, but I'm more happy to have contributed to a good team win. It was tough against spin in the middle overs, but I knew pace would come at some stage, the wind was blowing at one end, there was one short boundary and I backed myself to take on him (on his 30-run over against Shepherd). There was a period where I didn't face too many balls, the boundaries had dried up, but Jonny (Bairstow) took the pressure off me with his calculated hitting, his knock was very crucial.
England win their first Super 8 clash
Phil Salt's 87 runs not out off just 47 balls and Jonny Bairstow's unbeaten 48 run-knock off just 26 balls helped England beat the Windies and pick up their first win in this Super 8 stage. West Indies batting first posted 180/4 on the scoreboard. However, it was not enough in front of the English batting, who managed to chase it down with 15 balls remaining. The Three-Lions demonstrated absolute dominance in the batting.
