Team Indian captain Rohit Sharma has shut down speculation surrounding his retirement, asserting his desire to continue playing international cricket for a few more years. This comes amid reports suggesting Rohit might step down from T20Is after the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
These retirement rumors stemmed from a recent dip in form, particularly in the shortest format. However, Rohit seems laser-focused on his current goals, leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup and World Test Championship title at Lord's in 2025.
Rohit's recent comments show his commitment to towards Indian team and highlights his hunger for future triumphs.
"The journey has been wonderful, it has been 17 years; I still hope to play a few more years as well & make an impact in World cricket," he said on Dubai Eye 103.8.
Rohit also opened up on the challenges he has faced in his illustrious cricketing career.
"I have seen more downs than ups in my life, and the human and person I am today is because of what I have seen in the past, and in the downs," he added.
Yograj Singh backs Rohit Sharma amidst retirement talk
While rumors swirled about Rohit Sharma's potential retirement, Yuvraj Singh's father Yograj Singh, offered his support. He praised Rohit's talent and suggested the captain should continue playing as long as he feels capable. Yograj Singh emphasised Rohit's on-field abilities, implying fitness concerns shouldn't necessarily dictate his retirement timeline.
“I’ve never understood the talk about age. What is wrong if you are fit and performing at 40-45. The age factor should be scrapped, Rohit Sharma is a great player who never thought about fitness and training. If he does, he can play till he is 50,” he earlier said.
When asked about his leadership role, Rohit Sharma said:
"Captaining your country is the biggest honour that you can have, and for me, I have never thought that this would arrive where I'll be Captaining one day. But yeah, people say 'Good things happen to Good people," he said on Dubai Eye 103.8."
"When I took over as India Captain, I just wanted everyone to drive in one direction that's how team sport should be played, it's not about personal milestones & personal stats & goals, it is about what all 11 of us can bring to the table & win the trophy," Rohit added.
