Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team ended their Group A matches with 7 points and remained unbeaten. They won their first three games against Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States in an amazing fashion. However, their final Group game against Canada got washed out due to wet outfield after heavy rain. They will now be flying to the Caribbean land to compete in the Super 8s. Australia and Afghanistan are their two confirmed opponents in the next round of competition.
Seeded spots in Super 8 groups
The Group stage consisted of four groups with four teams each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8 stage, where they will be further divided into two more groups. ICC has already given seeded spots to teams in Super 8, two teams of all four groups had a seeded spot from the start of the tournament. However, if any of the eight seeded teams do not reach the Super 8, their place will be taken by the unseeded team that qualifies. Just like Afghanistan was eliminated and took New Zealand's spot in Super 8 as C1. BlackCaps were one of the seeded teams but their position was taken by the Afghan side following their failure in qualification.
Original seeded division
Group 1: India (A1), Australia (B2), New Zealand (C1), Sri Lanka (D2)
Group 2: Pakistan (A2), England (B1), West Indies (C2), South Africa (D1)
India's confirmed Super 8 matches
The Indian cricket team has two confirmed matches in the Super 8 stage. They will be starting the next round with the clash against Afghanistan in Barbados and their other confirmed game is against the former champions Australia. Their remaining clash, which was supposed to be against Sri Lanka but as the Lankan Lions have already been eliminated from the mega tournament, their spot will be taken by some other team from Group D.
As per the current scenario, Bangladesh is the front-runner to fill Sri Lanka's spot in the Super 8s. They are in a strong position after their win against Sri Lanka and the Netherlands and it is highly unlikely that changes will take place in the current scenario.
