Kohli saves the best for last

Earlier, Kohli shrugged off an inconsistent run to perform at the big stage. He stood as a rock in the middle while early wickets fell after Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first against the Proteas. Kohli stitched crucial partnerships with Axar Patel and Shivam Dube. In the slog overs, he targetted Kagiso Rabada and pushed the scoring rate. He departed after scoring 76 runs from 59 balls and helped India post 176/7. Indian pacers turned the game upside down in slog overs as India won by seven runs to lift the T20 World Cup trophy for the second time.

Kohli’s T20I retirement

The 35-year-old was named ‘Player of the match’ for his 76-run knock. During the post-match presentation ceremony, he also announced his retirement from T20Is from immediate effect. He retired as second-highest run-scorer in T20Is, just behind captain Rohit. Also, he retired as the highest run-scorer in T20 World Cups.

“Well, this was my last T20 World Cup.. And.. This is exactly what we wanted to achieve. This is an amazing game. I was telling Rohit today when we went out to bat I was like.. one day you feel like you can't get a run and then you come out and things happen. God is great. I bow my head in gratitude. I am really grateful that I was able to get the job done for the team on the day it mattered the most. (On his different approach today) Just the occasion. It was now or never I knew. This is.. my last T20 game playing for India,” Kohli said in the post-match presentation.
