After India's unceremonious exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup which resulted in England thumping the Men in Blue by 10 wickets in the semi-final, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), according to reports, is going to fine-tune the coaching roles and bring a much-needed overhaul.
According to a report in The Telegraph, the BCCI is in talks with the former India World Cup-winning captain, MS Dhoni for a massive role as India’s next permanent coach in the shortest format of the game or white-ball cricket. This comes after a set of recurring failures of the Indian team in the ICC tournaments as the team drew flak for their appalling performance at the multinational tournament.
The BCCI has concluded that the weight of coaching the Indian team in all three formats is becoming too heavy for Rahul Dravid. Hence, they have decided to free him of the T20 responsibility and bring in Dhoni, who still plays for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is the last captain to win India an ICC trophy.
As per the reports, Dhoni is all set to retire from IPL after 2023, so BCCI is keen on using his cricketing virtuoso and experience for the greater good of the senior national men's side. Dhoni has won India, all three ICC trophies (ODI World Cup in 2011, T20 World Cup in 2007 and Champions Trophy in 2013) while he has also led CSK to the IPL trophy four times.
The former Indian captain worked with the team for a short while in the UAE for the T20 World Cup in 2021, however, that stint could not produce the desired results as India faced an early exit. If Dhoni is bestowed with the responsibility this time around, he will have ample time to ready the team for the next T20 World Cup which is two years away. There are also rumours that Rohit Sharma will step down as the captain of India in T20Is and Hardik Pandya will be his successor. Pandya, who is the captain of the IPL team Gujrat Titans, led the franchise to glory in its debut season.
