Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah Riyad has been omitted from Bangladesh's 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup that will be played in Australia in October and November 2022. The veteran has not been in the best form of his life and team director, Khaled Mahmud Sujon said that the all-rounder has not produced the kind of performances expected of him in the last few months.
Earlier in 2022, Mahmudullah was relieved of his duties as the skipper of the Bangladesh T20I team as well. Sabbir Rahman, who played only one match in the Asia Cup after making his comeback in three years, will retain his spot in the team.
The Tigers have also been boosted by the returns of Nurul Hasan Sohan and Liton Das after the duo recovered from their respective injuries. All-rounder Mahedi Hasan played in the Asia Cup but failed to make the T20 World Cup squad. He has been included in the standby players along with left-hander Soumya Sarkar, leg-spinner Rishad Hossain and left-armer Shoriful Islam. Yasir Ali Chowdhury and Hasan Mahmud were also included in the squad after they recovered from injuries.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief Nazmul Hasan Papon said that Bangladesh is focusing on the next edition of the World Cup, not the upcoming one.
Before the Asia Cup, Shakib also said that expecting overnight results in Bangladesh’s T20 setup wouldn’t be correct.
Bangladesh’s first match in the T20 World Cup is against a Qualifier on October 24 at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. They failed to win a single match in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup in Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
