After India took a drubbing of 10 wickets against England in the semifinal of the 2022 T20 World Cup, it attracted ire from the fans and a fair amount of resignations from the room that calls the shot regarding who gets the nod in the squad. This one loss meant that the wait for an ICC trophy continues. This has not only prompted a rejig in the team but also has evacuated the room of the selectors.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a week later after India's cataclysmic exit from the T20 World Cup gave the selection committee the boot as the appointment for the new selectors remains up for grabs. The Chetan Sharma-led committee which lasted for nearly two years fell on its sword after India's dreadful performance.
Dinesh Karthik who was part of India's T20 World Cup squad as the designated finisher reacted to the news and said he was taken aback as they did not see it coming.
“Very interesting development. I think none of us saw it coming. It is also an opportunity for the new selectors coming in and we have to see how things unfold,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.
The 37-year-old wicketkeeper also defended Chetan Sharma for he did a 'good job' according to him and said the new selectors have their work cut out.
“I know this word 'sack' was used as lot, but I think their term was coming to an end as well. It is a tough job. Picking 15 players from a set of 40-45 players who are all good enough to represent the country it's not going to be easy. Credit to them. They have done a good job. The new selectors have some strong decisions to take,” he added.
India's transitional phase is already in motion with an inexperienced young side soaked in exuberance locking horns with the Blackcaps in New Zealand. The team is playing without some of their star players such as Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, as Hardik Pandya has taken up the mantle of leadership and is widely touted to be India's next T20I captain.
