Player profile: India's go-to powerplay specialist in Jasprit Bumrah's absence, this is Bhuvi's final chance at an ICC tournament

One of India's best pacers in his own right, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been a regular at international tournaments for the Men in Blue, usually anchoring the bowlers in pressure situations. The 32-year-old is a frontline bowler for India, and alongside Jasprit Bumrah, has led the side to victory on multiple occasions. He has played in six ICC tournaments for India — the 2013 and '17 Champions Trophies, the 2016 and '21 T20 World Cups, and the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Early life
Bhuvneshwar Kumar started playing cricket at the early age of 13. He started with Uttar Pradesh's team, playing different domestic and national level matches like the Duleep Trophy, Ranji Trophy, and others. Later in life, Bhuvi recalled that it was his sister who played a crucial role in making him a cricketer.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Ranji's success
A regular in the Uttar Pradesh Ranji team from a young age, Bhuvi made his debut as a 17-year-old against Bengal. But he grabbed the headlines as a 19-year-old when he dismissed the great Sachin Tendulkar for his first-ever duck in domestic first-class cricket during the  2008-09 Ranji Trophy final.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar International debut
Bhuvneshwar made his ODI and T20I debuts on Christmas Day in 2012, facing the mighty Pakistani bats at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This was soon followed by his Test debut in the Chennai Test against Australia in 2013. His performances in ODIs and the Indian Premier League (IPL) were quite impressive and Bhuvneshwar was selected for the ODI squad for the Champions Trophy in 2013. He finished with six wickets in five games but an economy rate of 3.91 ensured a place for him in the Team of the Tournament.

Tri-nation hero
The medium pacer was then selected for the tri-nation tournament where he bagged his career-best figures of 4-8 against Sri Lanka. He was the Man of the Series, having finished with the maximum number of wickets — 10 — equal with Rangana Herath, but a better economy rate of 3.34.

Shining on England pitches
In 2014, Bhuvi was chosen for the Test series in England, finishing the series as the highest wicket-taker and getting his name up on the Lord’s Honours board, as the raised seam of the Dukes helped him swing the ball in the air against a dangerous English batting line-up.

He also made relatively exceptional contributions with the bat, registering three fifties in the series. After the conclusion of the home series against West Indies in 2014, the selectors rested him for the Sri Lanka series. He returned to the national side for India's tour of Australia but did not feature in the first three Test matches due to an ankle injury.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar IPL career
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) go-to bowler since 2104. He started as a rookie for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2009 edition but did not play for his team. In 2011, he was bought by Pune Warriors India but it was until he joined SRH in 2014 that he came off his own. The star pacer won the Purple Cap for two successive seasons — 2016 (when SRH won the trophy) and 2017.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar in International tournaments
Unfortunately, after the 2013 Champions Trophy, Bhuvneshwar has not performed at major international tournaments for the country. He was chosen for the 2015 World Cup poor fitness meant that he played only one game against UAE. He had a topsy-turvy Champions Trophy in 2017, and the same can be said about his performance in the 2019 ODI World Cup, with 10 wickets in six matches. It was worse at the 2021 T20 World Cup, without a single wicket to his name.
