Virat Kohli set to break Mahela Jayawardene's all-time T20 World Cup record

India's in-form star batter Virat Kohli is on the cusp of achieving an all-time T20 World Cup record. Following two half-centuries in the first two games in the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia, Kohli needs 28 more runs to become the highest run-scorer in T20 World Cup's history.

Currently, former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene is at the top of the list with 1,016 runs from 31 innings at an average of 39.07 including one century and six half-centuries. With an unbeaten half-century against Netherlands on October 27 at Sydney Cricket Ground, Kohli has 989 runs from 21 innings at a stupendous average of 89.90 including 12 half-centuries.

In the previous game, Kohli surpassed T20 legend Chris Gayle's tally of runs. The West Indies opener had scored 965 runs from 31 innings at an average of 34.46 including two centuries and seven half-centuries. In the same fixture, Indian skipper Rohit hit a half-century to surpass former Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan. Rohit has 904 runs from 32 innings at an average of 37.66 including nine half-centuries.

Both Kohli and Rohit are likely to cross the 1,000-run mark in the next few games. The only other batter who has a chance of breaching the 1,000-run mark is Australian opener David Warner. However, Warner has been far from impressive so far. The southpaw registered scores of 11 and 5 against New Zealand and Sri Lanka respectively.

Warner has 778 runs from 32 innings at an average of 25.93 including six half-centuries. He had a chance to add to his tally on October 28 against England but rain played spoilsport at Melbourne Cricket Ground and the match was abandoned.

Table-toppers India will now take on in-form South Africa on October 30 in the bouncy conditions of Perth. A win against the Temba Bavuma-led side will seal India’s place in the semi-final.
