Watch: Shakib Al Hasan engages in heated exchange with Virat Kohli over no-ball demand from umpire

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was visibly unhappy with Virat Kohli during crucial T20 World Cup 2022 clash at Adelaide Oval. Shakib did not like Kohli’s gesture to square leg umpire in order to show that the ball was above his head and should be called a no ball.

The incident took place in the 16th over of the innings. Hasan Mahmud bowled a short ball. Kohli played a pull shot towards long leg for a single but signalled to the square leg umpire asking for it to be called a no ball.

Shakib immediately walked up to Kohli and expressed his disappointment. Kohli handled the situation well and gestured where he had hit the ball. Shakib felt that the player should not influence an umpire’s decision.

The umpire signalled the no ball and also intervened when Shakib and Kohli were having a discussion on the field. The no ball did not have much effect on the score as wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik could not get bat on ball on the free hit delivery.

Kohli went on to score 64 runs from 44 deliveries and helped India post 184/6. Shakib bowled well in his quota of four overs and picked up the wickets of opener KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav in the middle overs. In the run chase, he could not make an impact. Batting at no.3, the skipper scored 13 runs from 12 deliveries including two fours. In the end, Bangladesh lost the rain-curtailed game by five runs.

“It's been the story when we play against India, we are almost there but we don't finish the line. Both teams enjoyed it, it was a great game and that's what we wanted. At the end someone has to win and someone has to lose,” Shakib said in the post-match presentation.

With their third win in Super 12 stage, India dethroned South Africa from the top of Group 2 and have boosted their chances of reaching the semi-final. On the other hand, Bangladesh are in third place and will have to depend on results of other matches in addition to beating Pakistan on November 6 in order to advance to semi-finals.
