ICC Under-19 World Cup Warm-up Matches 2022

The stage is set for the 14th edition of the Under-19 World Cup as 12 teams gather to make their mark in the Caribbean islands. Friday (January 14) will see hosts West Indies take on Australia in the opening encounter at Providence Park in Guyana. Yash Dhull-led India will be eyeing a fifth title while underdogs Bangladesh will try to defend their title.&nbsp;The Indian U-19 team over the years has produced stars like Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Ravindra Jadeja and many others. The expectations are same from Team India this time around as well to stamp their authority in the competition. Before the mega tournament kicks off, here is a look at how Team India has fared in the junior competition over the years.&nbsp;Champions: 2000, 2008, 2012, 2018A team led by Mohammed Kaif consisted of India's legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as Team India lifted their maiden U-19 title in Sri Lanka. India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. Yuvraj and Kaif went on to be part of the senior team, famously winning the NatWest final in 2002 and playing in the World Cup final of 2003. Yuvraj would go on to add win inaugural T20 World Cup 2007 followed by World Cup 2011 where he was named Man of the series.&nbsp;The tournament in 2008 was not in limelight until the final when the senior team was in Australia and winning the CB series. A future star, Virat Kohli rose to the occasion at the same time in Malaysia as he led India to their second title win by beating South Africa in the final in Kuala Lumpur. Kohli would go on to win the 2011 World Cup and never look back as he was made the captain of India's senior side across formats.&nbsp;A team less renowned for producing future stars, players like Hanuma Vihari, Baba Aparajith went onto become big names in domestic circuit but didn't cement a place in the senior side. Unmukt Chand, captain of the side in 2012 scored a hundred in the final of the World Cup and steered India to its third title against Australia. Unfortunately, he never got going in the Indian conditions and went on to play overseas and is now eligible for the USA national team.&nbsp;After defeat in 2016 final, the Indian team was well on track to secure its fourth title under the stewardship of Rahul Dravid in 2018. Credited to raise stars like Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar, the former India captain was instrumental in helping the team win the U-19 title against Australia in the final. The team included the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill who later went on to be part of the senior roster.&nbsp;Runners-up: 2006, 2016, 2020The 2006 edition was the first time that the two traditional rivals had met in a World Cup final. Asked to chase 110, the Indian batting had a horrible collapse. Anwar Ali's 35/5 made the difference as India were bowled out for 71 in just 18.5 overs.&nbsp;The Indian team was no match to the West Indies side in 2016. India were beaten comprehensively in the final while chasing 146. The likes of Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan might have failed to win the title but they still went on to be one of the brightest talents in the show.&nbsp;The 2020 final was the record seventh time India had reached the final, but things didn't go according to plan as Team India was reduced to just 177 by the Bangladesh bowling lineup as the Tigers went on to win their maiden title. From Kohli's 2007 triumph to Shaw's dominating run, India's performances in U-19 World Cup over the years

The 14th edition of the ICC Under-19 World Cup is scheduled to start on January 14 (Friday) and the hosts West Indies will face Australia in the inaugural match of the World Cup at Providence Park in Guyana. Yash Dhull-led India will be aiming for a fifth title while another mighty challenger from Asia will be Bangladesh who will try to defend their title.&nbsp;Ahead of the first encounter, India U-19 coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar spoke about the current norms and the present bio-bubble situation. For the cricketers, apart from the opponents, another thing that has to be considered is bio bubbles in Covid-19 times. India U-19 coach, Kanitkar thinks that it is indeed a challenge but this is also the norm for the last couple of years.&nbsp;"It is a challenge but what we need to realise that this is the norm now for the last couple of years, and some more time in the future. This is reality now. We have to find things to do by staying in the bubble. The boys will be able to learn from this as after the World Cup, they may need to be in bubbles for various other teams," Kanitkar said during a virtual press conference on Thursday (January 13).&nbsp;First match against South AfricaIndian team will start their campaign against South Africa on January 15 (Saturday). India find themselves in Group B along with South Africa, Ireland and Uganda.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the warm-up games against West indies and Australia, India secured victories. The ‘Men in Blue’ had defeated West Indies by 108 runs and in the second warm-up game they clinched a comfortable victory against Australia by 9 wickets.&nbsp;&nbsp;Advantages of Asia CupThe Indian U-19 team had won the recently concluded the U-19 Asia Cup, defeating Sri Lanka in the final. According to Kanitkar that win was important because it helped to build the team.&nbsp;"The Asia cup was important because we hadn't played together as a team ever before, with this set of players. So it was good in terms of team building ahead of the World Cup," said Kanitkar.&nbsp;The expectations will be a lot from the Indian team as they will start as the favourites. India are the most successful team in the history of the event as they have lifted the U-19 World Cup four times- 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2018. They have been runners-up thrice as well- 2006, 2016 and 2020 and are biding for a fourth consecutive final. &nbsp;Regarding the pressure factor and expectations, coach Kanitkar said that every World Cup should be considered as a fresh start.&nbsp;&nbsp;“There is a huge legacy because, in the past tournaments, the Indian team has done well. But you need to understand every World Cup has a set of new guys and you are starting fresh. But what we try to do is not think too far ahead. We are not thinking about IPL auctions, Ranji Trophy, that comes later. Currently, our job is to take it as it comes and not think too far into the future,” the 61-year-old included.

Australia U-19 cricket team started their ICC U-19 World Cup journey convincingly after beating West Indies U-19 team by 6 wickets in the first match of the tournament. Chennai-born Nivethan Radhakrishnan, skipper Cooper Connolly and Tom Whitney picked up three wickets each to restrict their opponents within a total of 169 runs in 40.1 overs.&nbsp;West Indies skipper Ackeem Auguste won the toss and decided to bat first but the decision seemed to backfire as within first six overs they lost their first three wickets. Australia’s right-arm fast bowler Tom Whitney did the initial damage as he picked up two out of the first three wickets and gave his side an early advantage.&nbsp;&nbsp;A strong partnershipSkipper Auguste along with Rivaldo Clarke then played a solid partnership of 95 runs off 100 balls and successfully managed to avert the early danger. Wicketkeeper Clarke (37 off 42) was the first one to be dismissed after right-arm offbreak bowler Radhakrishnan provided the crucial breakthrough to break the partnership.&nbsp;&nbsp;Clarke’s mistimed drive was comfortably caught by Isaac Higgins.&nbsp;Auguste (57 off 67) on the other hand, looked solid and went on to complete his half century as well. But eventually he was dismissed by Connolly.&nbsp;Auguste played a slog sweep but it was not connected properly and as a result of that the ball went high up in the air and was eventually caught by the fielder standing at deep square leg.&nbsp;West Indies came to an end in the 41st over after they managed to put up a total of 169 all out.&nbsp;Aussie replyIn reply, Aussies lost their first wicket in the third over after their opening batsman Corey Miller was sent back to the dressing room without scoring a single run.&nbsp;&nbsp;Another opening batsman Teague Wyllie looked solid as he went on to score 86 off 129 balls and remained not out till the end. His match-winning knock was comprised of 8 fours.&nbsp;&nbsp;Wyllie got a good support from skipper Connolly (23 off 31 balls) and Nivethan Radhakrishnan (31 off 58 balls). Losing four wickets, the Aussies eventually reached the required target within 44.5 overs.&nbsp;In another match, Sri Lanka defeated Scotland by 40 runs.&nbsp;

India earned an emphatic 108-run victory against West Indies in their first warm-up match at the Providence Stadium in Guyana in built-up to Under-19 World Cup which will kick off from January 14.&nbsp;Riding on Nishant Sindhu's unbeaten 78 and captain Yash Dhull's sedate 52, India posted a target of 279-run, which the Carribeans failed to chase and were bowled out to 170. Kushal Tambe was the pick of the bowlers for India as he returned with a spell of 3/30. Batting first, India got off to a sloppy start as both the openers, Harnoor Singh (9) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (1), were removed cheaply to leave the scoreboard at 17/2. Shaik Rasheed (26 off 63) then showed some resistance to take hold of the situation as he steered the Indian innings to 104/3 before felling to Johann Layne.&nbsp; Then came the skipper Yash Dhull who steadied India's boat with a 67-ball knock which was decorated with six fours and two sixes. &nbsp;Aaradhya Yadav also contributed with his 42 off 40 balls. The star of the match remained Nishant, who stood tall with a splendid 76-ball knock which was loaded with three big ones and seven boundaries. He bolstered the Men in Blues' innings and guided them to post a competitive total of 278/6. ForWest Indies, Layne remained the pick of the bowlers as he scalped 3/51. In reply, the Caribbeans couldn't do much and were seen in all sorts of bother before the fiery Indian bowlers. Kushal paired up with Manav Parakh to dismantle the Windies' batting line up as the former plucked 3/30 and the later returned with 3/34. Garv Sangwan (2/18) and Anishwar Gautam (2/37) also shone with the bowl to wrap the Windies innings to a paltry 170. India will next face Australia on Tuesday (January 11) in their second warm-up match.Coming from a glory of Under-19 Asia Cup trophy, Team India is high on confidence and will be entering the ICC event as one of the favourites to lift the trophy. The Yash Dhull-led side will kick off its U-19 World Cup campaign against South Africa U-19 on Saturday (January 15). They will next face Ireland U-19 and Uganda U-19 on January 19 and 22, respectively.

India trounce West Indies by 108-run in warm match ahead of Under-19 World Cup

India U-19 cricket won the warm-up match against Australia U-19 team, played at the Providence Stadium, in Guyana, in a convincing fashion after the Yash Dhull-led side secured victory by 9 wickets.&nbsp;&nbsp;After winning the toss, the Indian team decided to send their opponents to bat first. The decision seemed to have paid off initially as within just six overs the Indian bowling unit managed to send Australia batsman back to the pavilion.&nbsp;Not a good startBoth the Aussie opening batsmen- Teague Wyllie (4 runs) and Corey Miller (8 runs)- failed to give a solid start to their batting.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then came skipper Cooper Connolly to bat at number three and played a solid knock off 117 off 125 deliveries to register a defendable total of 268 against the Indian team. Connolly’s innings was comprised of 14 boundaries and 4 sixes.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 18-year-old skipper was eventually dismissed by Indian medium pacer Raj Bawa. The Aussie skipper was dismissed on the last ball of the 46th over after Bawa took the catch off his own delivery to provide a crucial breakthrough.&nbsp;Connolly’s ton could have helped his side in crossing the 300-run mark but sadly the skipper did not get any fruitful from the other side of the crease. Aidan Cahill (27 off 27 balls) and William Salzmann (25 off 29 deliveries) were the other two batsmen who contributed somehow to post a respectable total on the board.&nbsp;&nbsp;India’s left-arm pacer Ravi Kumar was the best performer with the ball after the 18-year-old bowler picked up four wickets for his side. His partner Rajvardhan Hangargekar, right-arm medium pacer, on the other hand, scalped three wickets.&nbsp;&nbsp;Solid replyIn reply, the Indian batting unit never looked to be in trouble and from the very first ball seemed the favourites to win the contest.&nbsp;Both the Indian openers looked determined to secure the victory for their side. Opening batsman Harnoor Singh scored a century (100 off 1088 deliveries).&nbsp;Another opener, Angkrish Raghuvanshi scored 27 off 46 balls to provide a good start. Shaik Rasheed (72 off 74 balls) and skipper Yash Dhull (50 off 47 balls) played a formidable partnership to register a nine-wicket victory for the Indian team.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Yash Dhull-led side will start their ICC U-19 World Cup campaign on January 15 against South Africa. &nbsp;
